Finca Los Nogales is a family farm, or rather a company that combines tradition with innovation. It is located in the hamlet of El Diamante, just outside the town of Bruselas in the southern part of the department of Huila. The farm was founded by members of the Hernandez family around 1940. Its tradition and focus on growing the best coffee was then developed by Mr Ricaurte Hernandéz. After his death, it was unclear for a while what would become of this farm. About six years ago, however, the farm began to prosper under the stewardship of Oscar Hernandéz, Mr Ricaurte’s son, and is now a model for farmers throughout the area.

Science and passion – at Los Nogales, the focus is on innovation. The coffee world is constantly evolving and its connection with scientific knowledge is becoming more and more commonplace, or rather a necessity. Oscar therefore relies on the experience of a biochemist, an agricultural engineer, a microbiologist, as well as an experienced accountant and a very capable manager himself. The passion for what they do is not lacking in anyone, they pull together and if they have any differences of opinion, they take them as an asset.

Apricot, Vanilla, Red Florals   An estate of just two hectares, Finca La Fortuna lies on a mountainside in Tarqui, a region of Huila, Colombia. Tarqui has not traditionally been popular with coffee farmers as its undulating topography makes crop growth difficult. True to its name, Finca La Fortuna has the good fortune of being seated in a valley with a favorable microclimate, where a gentle wind dries the coffee consistently and evenly. Neir Guarnizo, owner of Finca La Fortuna, takes part in the Premium Project, an initiative that has enabled him to grow his coffee in a conscious and sustainable way. Each of Finca La Fortuna’s coffee cherries is picked and sorted for ripeness. After being washed, the coffee dries in small batches inside the farm’s parabolic dryers. Sudan Rume (also written as “Rume Sudan”) is an ancient landrace variety that was first cultivated in South Sudan’s Boma plateau. One of the main reasons Sudan Rume is not widely cultivated commercially is its low productivity. However, Sudan Rume has stronger resistance to Coffee Berry Disease and Coffee Leaf Rust than other Arabica strains, including Bourbon and Typica. Today, the variety is primarily cultivated by plant breeders to include in cultivars. One of its most famous descendants is SL-28. When Sudan Rume is grown commercially it is coveted for its cup quality and relative rarity.   Area: Huila, Colombia Process: Anaerobic Washed Variety: Sudan Rume Altitude: 1650 meters

Peach, Starfruit, Lemon   Myanmar started to grow coffee beans at the end of the 19th century, recently it has cooperated with the UN, more than 1,000 farmers have joined the plan to replace coffee with drugs in coffee cultivation. At the beginning of the transition period, farmers did not have enough capital for modern and scientific planting and planted in traditional and fertilizer-free ways, because the management and processing technology was not yet mature, but through the guidance of the UN experts and the help from officials of the Myanmar government, now farmers have the proper skills and knowledge to plant better coffee than before. Natural shade forest and low pollution natural environment help growing specialty coffee consistently. After years, the flavour performance has fully integrated the local terroir conditions, showing unexpected quality. More than half of coffee farmers are concentrated around Nan Shan State and Wacheng City, especially the area adjacent to Meimiao(Pyin Oo Lwin) is arguably the most important and best coffee producing area in Myanmar. Mr. Lim is the president of Aromatic Cooperative, which is located in South Shan State, Myanmar. It mainly processes coffee beans with an average height of 1500 to 1700 meters, include Catimor, Catuai, Cuturra and Bourbon.   Roasters Notes: It's a delight to find such a quality coffee from an uncommon origin like Myanmar, a hint that specialty is slowly but surely bringing up quality of coffees all over the world. This coffee is well processed and contains almost no more hints of thick herbal, earthy tones as known from coffees in the South East Asia region from the primary growing of Catimor varietal.
